Sword in the Desert

Story: WWII action drama about an underground network transporting Jewish refugees from Europe to the Palestine coast.

Scenery: Beach scenes were filmed on Del Monte Beach in Monterey.

Also of local interest: About 300 local people were hired as extras to portray Jewish refugees landing on the beach in heavy surf. Angelo DiGirolamo played a Jewish soldier on the beach. He also served the director and several stars at his restaurant (Angelo's on Fisherman's Wharf). The director wanted to film the landings on the beach east of the Naval Postgraduate School but Angelo advised him that it was much safer closer to the wharves. The director took his advice, but even so, one boat overturned during filming. The director later thanked Angelo, saying that if he had done the landings where he had originally planned it would have been a disaster and would have ruined his reputation.
