A Summer Place

Story: Heavy-duty soap opera about two families, one with a teenage son, the other with a teenage daughter. The father of one and the mother of the other were once lovers, but ended up marrying others. The two families get together on an island one summer and family dysfunction ensues.

Scenery: Exterior scenes, intended to represent locations in the northeastern United States, were filmed entirely on the Monterey Peninsula. The "Pine Island Inn," where much of the story takes place, was a Victorian house in Pacific Grove on the northwest corner of Lighthouse Avenue and 17 Mile Drive. The exterior of Colton Hall in Monterey was used as the setting for a girl's boarding school. Other scenes filmed at Pescadero Point in Pebble Beach, Carmel Bay near Point Lobos, the Monterey airport, the Monterey train station. A very brief scene of Troy Donahue getting off a bus was shot on Cannery Row in front of the old San Xavier warehouse, near what is now the Monterey Plaza Hotel. The Frank Lloyd Wright house on Carmel Point was shown in several scenes, and edited with beach scenes filmed at Asilomar beach in Pacific Grove.

Also of local interest: The Victorian house mentioned above was the residence of William R. LaPorte, who was Mayor of Pacific Grove some years before the movie was made. Sadly, the mansion burned down in 2023.
